Why use music to learn medicine?
Music tends to very memorable, so using it to explain medical concepts can enhance memory of those concepts. Β Many people learn the English alphabet using a song and remember it for many years. Β Tune Rx applies that concept to learning medicine. Β Music can also help make learning more enjoyable, relieving stress and enhancing wellness during medical training. Β The average person spends a considerable amount of time listening to music (20.7 hours per week according to a 2023 report from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI)). Β If some of that music can be medical music, a medical trainee can have some extra study time without adding another activity to their day.
What inspired the founding of Tune Rx?
Tune Rx founder J.C. Sue discovered during his first year of medical school that converting lecture notes to song lyrics helped him remember medical concepts long-term and make studying more enjoyable. Β He started Tune Rx to help others learn medicine through music, seeking to enhance both memory and wellness. Β You can learn more about his medical music journey on the About Tune Rx’s Founder page.
What evidence supports the use of music as a way to learn medicine?
While there appears to currently be a scarcity of formal research directly examining the use of music to learn medicine, there are some studies suggesting that music may aid memory in general and thus, may be useful for increasing memory of medical concepts. Β A 2024 study had findings suggesting that age does not affect musical memory, and aΒ 2023 study had findings suggesting that music triggers autobiographical memories more effectively than food does. Β Of course, since many people remember basic language concepts using songs they learned during childhood, there seems to at least be anecdotal evidence supporting the use of music for learning, both for medicine and education in general. Β If you happen to know of or be involved in any formal research about the use of music to learn medicine, please send an email to tunerx97531@gmail.com. Β Tune Rx founder J.C. Sue would love to hear about it!
